WVU Choirs

Audition and Rehearsal Information

Choir is an option for non-majors.
To apply for major acceptance in the WVU School of Music, auditions are required.  Learn more about our audition dates.

All music majors registered for voice lessons are required to sign up for a choir audition/placement.  Fall 2023 auditions/placements will take place August 14 – 16. The audition will include learning a short excerpt of a set piece as well as completing some sight-reading, rhythm, and tonal memory exercises. For the set piece, please learn whichever part best suits your voice. During the audition, you will be asked to sing a section of the piece while additional voice parts will be played on piano.

High School Choral Festival

We are very excited at WVU to be bringing back the High School Choral Festival this semester.

The 2023 WVU High School Choral Festival is an opportunity for High School students from West Virginia and surrounding states to sing alongside WVU choir members under the direction of Dr. Jason Max Ferdinand.

The event takes place on Saturday, October 14 at the WVU College of Creative Arts. The students will enjoy several hours of music making with Dr. Ferdinand. Rehearsals will take place during the morning and after lunch followed by a concert featuring performances by the WVU choirs and culminating in a performance of the massed choir. The day begins at 9am and ends around 5pm.

The cost per student is $30. This includes copies of the scores, a t-shirt, and lunch on the day. Where needed we may also be able to assist with the cost of transporting students to the event.

For further information, please contact WVU’s Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Kym Scott at kym.scott@mail.wvu.edu
