Graduate Piano Proficiency Exam
I. All students will be asked to perform one piece. Choose a piece which best demonstrates your command of the instrument. Memorization is optional, and single movements of more extended works are acceptable.
II. All students will be asked to demonstrate their command of functional keyboard skills, including the following:
1) Major and harmonic minor scales, 2 octaves, hands together, correct fingerings
2) Candences (I, IV, IV7, I) in all major and minor keys, root, first inversion and second inversion, correct fingerings
3) Sight Reading
4) Prepared harmonization of the following melodies:
- a. Star Spangled Banner
- b. Happy Birthday
- c. Auld Lang Syne
5) Score reading: Be prepared to read any two lines (simultaneously) of a vocal or instrumental score. Transposition may be required.
6) Melody harmonized at sight with diatonic chords and secondary dominants
The exam will be administered by appointment.
