Undergraduate Piano Proficiency Exam, 2009
To any student who has not been enrolled in piano classes (e.g. piano principals, organ principals, students who have placed out of piano classes)
West Virginia University Bulletin: “Each student is required to demonstrate proficiency in keyboard harmony by passing a special examination.”
The exam will include the following:
- Major and harmonic minor scales, 2 octaves, hands together, correct fingerings
- Cadences (I, IV, I, V7, I) in all major and minor keys, root, first inversion and second inversion, correct fingerings
- Sight reading
- Prepared harmonization of the following melodies:
- Star Spangled Banner
- Happy Birthday
- Auld Lang Syne
- Score reading: Be prepared to read any two lines (simultaneously) of a vocal or instrumental score. Transposition may be required.
∗Non-keyboard principals: If you have not already performed an appropriate-level piano solo during your piano placement exam, you will need to perform one appropriate-level solo piano piece to earn the piano performance level required for your degree program.
The exam will be administered by appointment.
