Symphony Orchestra Concert

February 25, 2010
7:30 pm
Lyell B. Clay Theatre

The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Mitchell Arnold, conductor, will perform Symphony No.5 by Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev. “Our students are thrilled to sink their musical teeth into this passionately dramatic work, ” said WVU Director of Orchestral Activities, Mitchell Arnold. “Some composers strive to write symphonies that capture all the joy, grief, tragedy and comedy of life. Few succeed as well as Prokofiev. No wonder this is one of the most popular works written in the 20th century.”

Also featured on the program is the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Béla Bartók, with Maggie Snyder, WVU’s Professor of Viola, as soloist. “This is music that demands mastery of all the capabilities of the viola, from the deepest sonority to light virtuosic passage work. The Morgantown community is fortunate to have such a talented performer as Professor Snyder, ” said Arnold.

The concert begins with the spectral, Valse Triste, by Jean Sibelius.
