Flute Audition Requirements:

Undergraduates: please prepare two contrasting movements, or two contrasting pieces, of a work for flute or flute and piano. One of these may be a standard etude. Also, prepare all major scales (if possible), slurred for two octaves.

Graduate Auditions
For MM auditions, please prepare at least two significant movements of contrasting style and/or period (such as Hindemith Sonata, first movement; Dutilleux Sonatine), plus the first movement of a major concerto (such as Mozart, Nielsen). For MM in Performance, please also prepare several contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice. Your audition may be without piano unless you are submitting a recording.

For DMA auditions, please prepare contrasting movements of a major early sonata or concerto (such as those by J.S. Bach or C.P.E. Bach), two contrasting movements of a major concerto (such as Mozart, Nielsen, etc.), two contrasting movements of a major 20th Century sonata (such as Prokofiev, Muczynski, etc.), and the major solos from Beethoven – Leonore Overture No. 3, Mendelssohn – Scherzo, and Brahms – Symphony No. 4. All works written for flute and piano must be performed with piano at the audition. In your DMA application materials, please also include a writing sample in the form of an essay discussing your reasons for entering the DMA program.

If you are planning to audition for WVU, please contact me so that we may schedule a lesson. I enjoy meeting with students in a relaxed setting so that you may ask questions freely.
