35th WVU Invitational High School Honor Bands

February 13-15, 2014
WVU Creative Arts Center

2014 Guest Conductors

Dr. William Wakefield, University of Oklahoma

Dr. Nicole Gross, Director of Athletic Bands at Indiana State University

Ms. Sherry Poole, Director of Bands at Ripley High School (WV)

One of the most exciting musical events we host at West Virginia University occurs annually in February. On behalf of the School of Music at WVU, we would like to invite you and your students to participate in the 35th WVU Invitational High School Honor Bands to be held on February 13-15, 2014. This event will be a unique opportunity for your students to share music-making with top talent from a seven-state area. For our event, there are no uniforms, no medals, and no awards – just quality music performed under outstanding guest conductors in a great concert hall.

Much of the success of our Honor Bands is due to the outstanding guest conductors who bring their talents to Morgantown. We are pleased to announce that our conductors this year will be Dr. William Wakefield – Director of Bands at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Nicole Gross – Director of Athletic Bands at Indiana State University, and Ms. Sherry Poole – Band Director at Ripley High School (WV).

This year, we anticipate over 100 schools will participate in our Honor Bands! While this number is extremely exciting, it also creates some very real problems on how many students we can actually select from each school. Therefore, please note the number of spaces available on the on-line nomination form. We would like to strongly encourage each director to nominate only his/her very top students; we want it to truly be an honor to be selected to participate in this event. Please understand that you are nominating your students and that as many qualified applicants as possible from your school will be selected. Due to a number of factors, we ask that you please do not assume that every student you nominate will be selected.

NEW! This year, nominations can be submitted via a fillable form rather than handwritten – simply type the information on your computer! Therefore, no blank forms are included in this mailing. We hope this is convenient for you; it will insure greater accuracy in the spelling of student names in the concert program. The form can be accessed here: Nomination Form . The form can then be submitted by either: 1) (preferred) emailing it to or 2) faxing it to (304) 293-2336. This nomination form must be submitted no later than Friday, January 10th. Once the January 10th deadline has passed, all schools will be notified of those selected and will receive other pertinent information (schedule, what to bring, hotel information, etc.). Any updated information about the Honor Band event will be posted on the above website.

The only expenses students will need for the weekend are the $30.00 registration fee (payable at the time of registration), meals, and lodging (if needed). The music, guest conductors, master classes, and workshops will be furnished by WVU. Students will again receive a complimentary WVU Honor Band t-shirt.

Over the years, our Honor Bands have proven to be a terrific music-making opportunity. We trust this will be an experience that will further enhance the overall musicianship of your top students. We hope you and your students will be able to join us for the Honor Bands weekend!
