The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra, Mitchell Alan Arnold, conductor, announces the second concert of its 2012-2013 season, 7:30 pm, November 15, 2012 in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre.
The program features two major works: Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé Suite No. 2 and the flute concerto “The Deceitful Face of Hope and of Despair” by Sofia Gubaidulina featuring newly appointed WVU Professor of Flute, Nina Assimakopoulos.
“The shimmering sonic beauty of Daphnis and Chloé is a feast for the ears,” said Dr. Mitchell Arnold, WVU Director of Orchestral Activities. “The beautifully lush orchestral sounds and wild closing dance evoke the pastoral utopia of this ancient Greek story of love.”
“The Deceitful Face of Hope and of Despair” is unlike any flute concerto I have ever heard,” continues Arnold. “With a work that alternates between subterranean depths of despair and shimmering, heavenly sonorities, Gubaidulina profoundly memorializes her daughter, who died a year before the concerto was composed.”
Also on the program is Debussy’s Children’s Corner, six short pieces capturing the world of Debussy’s then three-year old daughter. WVUSO Assistant Conductor and Director of the Morgantown Community Orchestra, Alejandro Pinzòn will conduct Children’s Corner.
